Joining The Ranks

At work last Thursday, we had heard there was a second round of lay-offs which had happened at the Louisville office and there were more to come at my office in Frankfort. We thought that the IT department wouldn't be affected. We thought wrong.

About three o'clock the CIO tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to follow him to our training room and there sat, with downcast eyes, our Human Resources director. My job and twenty-six other positions had been eliminated. They had put together a nifty lay-off information presentation which I was in too much shock to retain much of.

I didn't remember much on the drive home, my head was swimming. How does a fifty-four year old man find a job in a state in which the unemployment rate is almost ten percent?

Say a little prayer for me and the legions in limbo-land.

  1. Sorry to hear that, tough break. I guess now's the time for personal innovation. Those 'other' skills you have will become primary. Hopefully you and many others will be OK.

  2. Oh my BB, I am in shock with you. I can't think of a damn thing to say at the moment but that you will find something, you two will manage. WIll check back in to see how you are, so please keep us updated. I'm sure your emotions are going though many phases right now...

  3. I am so sorry. I have been struggling to find a job (at 56) for two years. I come close, but then something does not fall into place. Keep the faith. I got laid off when I worked for Western Union and I could not believe it! So I totally understand the feeling. I was driven (thank God) from Columbus to my car in Cinti or I never would have made it.

  4. We lost some good people on Thursday. It hit me like a punch to the stomach when Mike told me you were in the "other" meeting. I'll keep my eyes open for you, and let me know if you need a reference.
