Snowy Job

As soon as I walked in the door yesterday from work, wife said that a sales guy was coming soon to save us money by switching our phone, cable, and internet from Piddly-Local service provider to Mega-National-Company phone, cable, and internet. I was overjoyed and couldn’t wait for our evening walk or gym time to be shot to hell.

The sales guy asked what our Piddly-Local monthly bill was. I told him, knowing that he had his stock sales reaction at the ready. He slowly shook his downcast head. “You’re paying that much?” Oh silly me.

Sales guy asked what I did for a living. I said I was in Information Systems. He blinked twice in quick succession. He then made the spiel of the millions of dollars Mega-National-Company has spent upgrading their network to carry far more data than Piddly-Local can offer. Oh the faster downloading crap life for me.

I’ve thought many times of unplugging myself from the media grid and live the life of Ted Kaczynski or Thoreau….nahhhh. Wife wouldn’t have it and we’ve been massaged by the media far too long. We’re firmly entrenched children of the television age and besides that, I couldn’t survive long, cut off from news about Michael Jackson.

We’ll have a new dish on our roof in a couple of weeks. God bless our TV snow filled souls.

“Most of the luxuries and many of the so-called comforts of life are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind.”— Thoreau

  1. We have only over-the-air TV. Previous to the digital switch I bought a new HD roof antenna and a signal booster - and a new HD Sony TV.

Despite all the new gadgets - this is what happened: Previously we received 6 main stations (excluding the religious channels).

After the switch we now have 3 stations and the never watched religious stations. I'm mostly pissed at the lost of PBS and future football games on Fox.

Something tells me the cable companies were behind this switch over and their business must be booming.

We'll get by with only ABC, NBC and CBS - I refuse to pour money down the hole called cable.

Nexflix is now our number one tv program.

  3. Well we've had Time Warner, then went to Direct TV, of course I had the Game channel and loved it, even though a lot of the shows were old reruns. Also had the Hallmark Channel, then we went back to Time Warner, because we also got our internet with them, then again, Mr. Lincoln thought we could get a better deal, so we went to DISH this time, and got out internet connection through our Verizon phone company. Well we found out we weren't getting nearly the stations our neighbor was getting and we were paying more, I called DISH, but they didn't seem to want to do anything about it, and we were locked in for two years. As soon as the two years were up, we went back to Time Warner, this time getting our cable, internet and phone. Most of the time it's ok, once in a while we lose all connections, so we sit around and talk. LOL That's almost something new anymore. But going back to Time Warner and getting the more or less basic on my set, and HD on my husbands, and he needs a box to receive it, he also gets a lot more stations, but I told him, up to channel 78 was enough for me. I get one channel for movies with no commercials, but I mostly watch old reruns during the summer on TV Land and Nick, sometimes I watch the Disney channel. I usually watch all of the CSI and Law and Order series, also Criminal Minds. But so far, price wise, what we have now is the best deal. I can call anyone in the US at any time and we pay one flat rate phone bill. So that's nice. Considering almost all of my family is long distant calling from where we live. But it would be nice if Time Warner had a little competition in our area.
